Probably the result does not change the final rankings of Group A any more, but it was really surprising and a small sensation. On game day 5 of the Championships in Belgrade, Serbia the Netherlands beat the reigning World League finalist Spain 12-11 (4-2, 3-4, 4-2, 1-3). The Dutch took a 4-2 lead in the first period and were never looking back. Spain just levelled once in the second period, 6-6, but the Netherlands gained an 11-8 lead in the third period. Tjerk Kramer scored five goals for Dutch, who only lost two of five Preliminary Round games but missed the medal round.

After the game no Dutch observer could remember to the last victory of their team against the two-time World Champion and 1996 Olympic gold medallist, which has regained strength after the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. The Dutch are also building up a young team after two missed World Championships in a row; today´s match was at least a small step forward.
The result is not expected to change the group rankings of Group A any more. After two ties and today´s victory the Dutch are ranking fifth, playing the winless team of Slovenia in the ranking matches. The Spaniards will probably keep their second place, because Romania has to beat World champion Serbia in tonight´s last Preliminary Round game here in Belgrade.
