Late last year the Committee agreed that a new waterpolo pitch was long overdue and desperately required for the forthcoming Summer '06 season. This would be a full-sized one with the facility of downsizing it to accommodate the junior team's requirements. Committee member Peter Sullivan took the bull by the horns as he confirmed his commitment of actually doing one himself professionally, as the new official waterpolo rules dictate.
Well, this pitch-making is now in full swing and shortly nearing its completion - with Peter's total dedication, concentration and commitment reaping positive results. Additionally, a separate new mini waterpolo-pitch for our young players is also being set-up.
Peter tells us that this pitch-making is taking a lot of time with plenty of 'craftsmanship' patience combined with a sharp eye to detail, measurements, etc. being the main requisites. All has to be done to exact scale and measurments as required by FINA, the international waterpolo body.
It's taken nearly 5,000 bits of different coloured floats, piping, shackle-locks and so many other types of steel joints with varying technical names too long to list here, for Peter to put this waterpolo pitch together.
Once fully completed, this full-sized waterpolo pitch will be laid at the Exiles Sports Club shoreline and put to good use in educating our sporting swimming youngsters.
Champagne corks will fly during its inauguration. And Peter's project concluded.
A few snap-shots taken recently at the Club premises.
