Sliema 14 Exiles 5
(7-2) (1-2) (3-1) (3-0)
In their second match of the Winter League played on Wednesday 19th March, Exiles made a marked improvement from the first outing but still ended losing heavily against neighbours Sliema. The Blues had a strong start to build a comfortable lead by the end of the first quarter. Exiles reacted in the second session winning it to reduce the gap half-way through the encounter. Our team faded in the last two sessions as concentration and energy were scarce to squeeze just one goal against six of their ‘more quoted’ opponents.
Coach Aurelien Cousin made some tactical changes in the attack which were evidenced by a faster recovery when defending the fort. The fourteen expulsions collected by the Sliema players reflected the sharpness in the swimming of our boys. That only two were converted showed lack of accuracy due to physical fatigue. The Blues had five conversions out of eleven man-ups including three penalties one of which was saved by keeper Ian Bugeja. All told both teams shared the exchanges but our opponents had sharper shooters and deadly finishing.
Scorers for Exiles were Kurt Griscti (2 goals), and one goal each Julian Rizzo Naudi, Nicky Portelli and skipper Kayne Lanzon.
The squad was made up of Ian Bugeja,Julian Rizzo Naudi, Simon Vassallo, David Pace Lupi, Luca Borg, Nicky Portelli, James Spiteri Staines, Kurt Griscti, Luca Peric, Peter Borg, Benji Lanzon, Steve Galea Pace and KayneLanzon.
Our next match is this afternoon at 16.45 hours when at the National Pool, Exiles face another arduous task when they take on San Giljan.
