Fatal third session foils Exiles

Exiles Elia Caterers 9 San Giljan 14

Partial scores (1-2) (4-3) (2-5) (2-4)

A black-out lasting four minutes in the first part of the third quarter marred what seemed an encouraging display by Exiles when last night they met San Giljan with their ace Matthew Zammit a constant menace to the Exiles fort – scoring 6 goals.

A balanced first two sessions saw the Saints building a three-goal lead (4-1) before Exiles reacted to draw level (5-5) whilst Marco Orlov rested Zammit closer to the end of the second session.

The third session was the downfall of Igor Vukanic’s team when within four minutes, San Giljan built up a five-goal gap (10-5) thanks to casual marking, three penalties awarded and the conversion of a man-up situation before a brace by Kurt Griscti reduced the gap to three (10-7) at the start of the fourth session.

Ninety seconds in the final quarter and San Giljan extended their lead to five goals (12-7). At this stage, both coaches gave a chance to players on the bench.

Exiles converted one of their four man-up situations. San Giljan found the net once out of their three ‘extra man’ but converted the four penalties awarded.

Scores for Exiles, Aurelien Cousin (3 goals), Kurt Griscti (3 goals), Timmy Sullivan, Mark Fenech and Benji lanzon one goal each.

The fourth match in this year’s Winter League series, is on Saturday 6th April when Exiles take on Sliema at 17.30 hours.
