Exiles finished their league commitment with a slick display against Valletta United when both teams met last Friday 25th August at the National Pool Sports Complex. The final score was 11-4 for Dorian Pisani’s team.
A slow and erratic start by both contenders, saw the Whites take an early lead (2-1) before Exiles drew level (2-2) 25 seconds to the end of the first quarter. Exiles revved up to pile seven goals (9-2) before Valletta scored their third goal 35 seconds from the end of the third session. The last eight minutes of the match were a formality as both teams settled for a 1-1 score with Exiles in command.
What titled the match towards Dorian Pisani’s team was the sharp finishing. With Slobo Nikic well marked in the Citizens’ defence, the responsibility fell on the other shooters to finalize the attacks. Timmy Sullivan and Kurt Griscti were terrific in their shots. Goalkeeper Matthew Castillo was also a protagonist – not only did he save a crucial penalty in the second session but was an inspiration when blocking Valletta’s shots at goal though signs of nervousness in the opponents’ clan reflected in a number shots off target. Slobo Nikic gave the usual contribution to his team’s defence as he shadowed Vapenski who squeezed two of his side’s four goals. It was a team’s effort an a reward to coach Dorian Pisani and his assistant Matthew Pisani.
There were six Exiles players excluded for 20 seconds but Valletta failed to convert any of them. In the second session Exiles converted three consecutive man-ups to widen the gap whilst the other five ‘extra-man’ situations were missed. A penalty awarded for an infringement of a Valletta player sent off was converted.
On the last match card of the 2017 season, Dorian Pisani fielded the following players: Matthew Castillo, Julian Rizzo Naudi, Daniel Borg Millo, Michele Stellini (1 goal), Timmy Sullivan (6 goals), Slobodan Nikic, Kurt Griscti (3 goals), Nicky Paris (1 goal), Luca Felice, Benji Lanzon, Jake Bajada and Gianni Ciappara.
