Exiles Jetfreight 9 Sliema 6
Partial scores (1-2) (3-0) (2-1) (3-3)
The Exiles Ladies team repaid their coach Gordon Zammit with a superb display to land its first ever League Championship. An enthusiastic crowd which rallied to the platform of the Clubhouse, witnessed a throbbing match which saw Sliema taking an early lead (3-1) before Exiles pulled back in the second session with three goals (4-3) to nose ahead. The third session saw Exiles increase their lead to three (6-3) but in the last quarter Sliema twice reduced the gap to two goals (6-4) and (7-5). Exiles sealed the issue with two more goals to open a four-goal margin (9-5) with our neighbours clipping the gap to three goals but with seventy seconds left as a calm Exiles side administered the lead until the final horn.
It was the teamwork. stamina and a solid defence which won the day for ‘the Girls’ as they kept at bay their opponents who had to resort to shooting just outside the seven metre area.
The official presentation of the champions’ trophy will be made on the last match of this season’s campaign when Exiles take on B’Bugia next Thursday 31st August. Celebrations at the Clubhouse will held following the presentation of the medals and the League Trophy.
In the meantime, another important appointment awaits Gordon Zammit and his newly-crowned league champions when they take on Sliema again on Saturday the 2nd September 2017 at 16.45 hours at the National Swimming Sports Complex in the Knock-Out final.
The following ladies formed part of the victorious team; Abby Bonello, Nicole Pace, Kendra Navarro (2 goals), Elena Borg (1 goal), Alexia Scicluna, Petra Mercer, Agnese Rella (2 goals), Samantha Tabone, Giulia Zammit Lon, Michela Zammit (4 goals), Belinda Azzopardi and Nat Brewer
