Exiles no match to powerful San Giljan

Exiles 6 San Giljan 18 (2-3) ( 0-4) (1-6) (3-5)

It was one of the worst performances seen this season but the start was encouraging as a slight one-goal lead and a penalty awarded to Exiles could have increased the gap by two but Gergerly Katonas failed to score. Not that the team would have won with such a fickle advantage at the very early stages of the encounter but it could have given a boost need by the boys against a determined San Giljan team. The second and third sessions were characterized by erratic shooting on our part and conceding goals from contra-breaks. The few times we potted at goal were easy prey of our opponents’ goalkeeper. By the time the final quarter started, the boys gave up the expected fight. Exiles coach Maurizio Mirarchi used his usual tactic of the constant changing of his players in an effort to guess the right formula but to no avail, In the last session when the points had been won and lost, both coaches gave a chance to the younger players and the partial result looked respectable.

It was disheartening to see the team fritter away numerous number of man-ups 6 out of the first 6 in the match whilst the last three situations were converted when the game was ‘over’. Exiles did have another penalty awarded and scored by Sikulic. San Giljan converted seven of their nine opportunities and had also a penalty awarded which was converted.

Mirarchi made use of Ian Bugeja, Julian Rizzo Naudi (1 goal), Simon Vassallo (1 goal), David Pace Lupi, Gergerly Katonas (2 goals), James Spiteri Staines who was back in the squad, Kurt Griscti (1 goal), Luka Sekulic (1 goal), Peter Borg, Benji Lanzon, Diego Borg and Kayne Lanzon.

The team has a few days to re-group for the next encounter against Sirens on Saturday the 26th July at 18.15 hours at the National Pool.
