Exiles 7 Sirens 13
Exiles succumbed to their fifth consecutive defeat at the hands Sirens when the two teams met on Wednesday 24th June 2015. At the end of the first round they are placed last out of the six teams participating in this Summer’s Premier Waterpolo League.
After a slow start in which the Northerners took up a 4-1 lead, Exiles reacted to draw level two minutes from the end of the second session (4-4) before conceding yet another soft goal to end 4-5 in their opponents’ favour midway through the encounter. In the third session Sirens once again stretched their lead to four goals (8-4) before another comeback by the boys reduced the margin to read 6-8. In these three sessions Exiles suffered six expulsions of which Sirens capitalized on three occasions. Exiles had just two man-ups throughout the whole game and scored one of them. The match was closely fought in the last session with Exiles constant chasing the score and with four minutes from time Sirens held to their two-goal margin. In the final minutes Exiles fumbled their sterile attacks and Sirens were clinical enough to score four goals on the counter attack.
Once again in the third and fourth sessions there were once again the usual controversial decisions but Exiles never got to grips with the encounter and their frantic urge to attack and conclude without taking care of their rearguard cost them the match and the points. The after-match comments by the Italian mentor towards the local referee, cost him a one-match suspension meaning that the next encounter against Sliema on Wednesday 1st July he will have to watch proceedings from the stands.
Coach Mirarchi made use of twelve players, Ian Bugeja, Julian Rizzo Naudi , Simon Vassallo,David Pace Lupi, Romain Blary (1 goal), James Spiteri Staines, Sean Gravina (2 goals), Kurt Griscti, Andrea Bianchi , Marco Cuk (4 goals), and Kayne Lanzon. Goalkeeper David Abela was given the green light in the dying minutes of the match and made his debut whilst Luca Peric was not utilized.
