Despite ending on the losing side, Exiles played their best match of the series which came to an end last Friday 15th April when they met Sirens to determine the 5th and 6th final placing in this year’s Waterpolo Winter League.
The team suffered no less than ten expulsions, one penalty and a simultaneous exclusion. Except for the penalty which Sirens converted, Exiles kept a ‘clean sheet’ when defending man down. Out of the six man-up situations, Exiles finally managed to break the duck to take advantage of the numerical superiority to score once.
Coach Dorian Pisani had no alternative but to rope in two youngsters in the fray when in the latter minutes third session Simon Vassallo and Julian Rizzo Naudi were fouled out followed by Andrea Bianchi in the second minute of the last quarter.
The lead of four goals half-way the second session (5-1) fizzled when in the third quarter an inexperienced team in the water, allowed their opponents to score five goals without reply (5-6) but undoubtedly the absence of their two regulars was sorely missed, as was injured Sean Gravina who was not even inserted in the line-up.
The team must now concentrate on its preparation for Summer Premier League which is expected to commence in a few weeks’ time.
