Exiles share spoils with Sirens

Partial scores (2-2) (1-0) ) (1-1) (2-3)

Exiles earned their first point of this year’s waterpolo season when earlier this evening they drew against a much fancied Sirens side which approached this match with an impressive display against Valletta United in their first outing. It was an encouraging team effort by Dorian Pisani’s boys who limited their opponents’ margin to a slender goal to stay in the fray until the dying seconds when they netted the equalizer practically on the stroke of time. The steady performance was built on a solid defence that did have its lapses when two soft goals were suffered from loose marking. Overall, the Exiles’ Coach must be pleased  with the determination shown by all the players in defending their fort and the offensive part when their dangerman Slobo Nikic was often crowded by two and at times three Sirens’ defenders.

Sirens had five players excluded with Exiles converting three of them including the final one 13 seconds from the final whistle and which saw Sean Xerri de Caro slamming home to grab the well-merited equalizer for his squad. Exiles were seven times a man short conceding three goals but avoided the rest. Besides two simultaneous exclusions, Sirens converted a penalty awarded to them. Our opponents’ erratic shooting forced Sergio Afric to change tactics in the second part of the match by playing around Italian ace Presciutti to finish off their attacks but the double marking on the Sirens player proved effective with the brace he scored coming from a penalty and a shot from 8 metres in the last second of the third session.

Tonight’s performance augurs well for the encounters lined up for the Exiles team.

The following players took the water for this match; Matthew Castillo, Julian Rizzo Naudi, Michele Stellini (2 goals), Timmy Sullivan Sean Xerri de Caro (1 goal), Slobodan Nikic (3 goals), Kurt Griscti, Nicky Paris, AndreaBianchi, and Luca Felice.

Next match sees Exiles take on Valletta United next Wednesday 14th June 2017  with the swim-up at 18.45.
