Exiles let slip its grip on a match that was going their way. In last night’s encounter, they beat nearest rivals Valletta United 9-8 to finish on equal points with the Citizens in the classification but the goal difference in the direct encounters condemns the Boys to the 6th place. Valletta have a game in hand against Sirens. To retain their Premier status next season, Exiles now meet the First Division Champions (Marsascala or Marsaxlokk) in a ‘best of three matches’ play-off.
Back to the match – Exiles built up a four-goal lead early in the last session but failed to find the net until the final horn, letting their opponents inch closer as seconds ticked.
It was a merited win for Mirarchi’s Boys but the team’s grittiness faded in the last quarter as they missed open chances including three man-up situations.
Exiles now wait for tonight’s encounter between the two First Division contenders to know who will be their challengers.
A detailed report to follow shortly.
