First win for Exiles

Marsascala 8 Exiles Elia Caterers 10

Partial scores (1-3) ( 3-2) (0-3) (4-2)

Exiles won their first points when earlier this evening that had the better of a combative Marsascala side lead by ex Coach Dorian Pisani.

It was a hard-fought match as it was the last chance for Marsascala’s hopes to qualify for the Premiership having already lost to B’Bugia earlier in the Round. For Exiles it was a tough hurdle with keeper Matthew Castillo outstanding as he thwarted the opponents’ efforts at goal. A poker by Marko Jelanka and a hat-trick by Milos Vukicevic kept Exiles in the running. Poor finishing and sloppy blocking saw their opponents narrow the gap in the final stages of the match.

Exiles had a flying start winning the first quarter 3-1 with two goals by Marko Jelenka and a back-hand by Milos Vuvicevic. At the half-way mark, only a goal separated the teams (5-4) as the Southerners reacted to keep close. In the third minute of the third session Exiles lost Marko Jelenka after his third personal fault. Marsascala failed to take the opportunity to capitalize and it was Exiles who inched ahead with three goals to widened the gap to four (8-4) seventy-seven seconds to the end of the quarter. Meanwhile Scala lost their main spearhead Averka after being dismissed for aggressive play for the rest of the match just inside the last four minutes of the same quarter. Marsascala kept on coming in the last session scoring four goals against two well taken ones for Exiles to edge their opponents and bag the three precious points.

Apart from a simultaneous exclusion, both teams had the same number of man-ups seven of which only two were converted. Each team was awarded a penalty which was also converted.

Igor Vukanovic had at his disposal the following players, Matthew Castillo, Michele Stellini (1 goal), Andrew Magri, Marco Jelaka (4 goals), Timmy Sullivan (1 goal) Sean Xerri de Caro, Mark Fenech, Kurt Griscti, Milos Vukicevic (3 goals), Aurelien Cousin, Nicky Paris (1 goal), Philip Paris, Simon Apap and second goalkeeper Max Martin.

Exiles  play their third match of the Preliminary Round of Group B on Tuesday 25th June when they meet San Giljan at 19.30 hours.
