Poor start foils Exiles’ late rally

Exiles Elia Caterers 9 Neptunes 10

Partial scores: (1-5) (2-3)(4-1) (2-1)

At the half-way stage of last night’s encounter, Neptunes had a five-goal lead (8-3) which had widened to six, with one minute from the end of the second session. Bolstered by a solid defence marshaled by an in-form Exiles custodian Matthew Castillo and tactical tips by Coach Igor Ivanovic, saw Exiles trim down their opponents lead to a mere goal 21 seconds to the final horn. It was another convincing performance against a young and depleted  Reds’side shorn of their internationals Camilleri brothers. When both sides met earlier this month, it was Neptunes that turned tables after a weak first session to win 16-12 in the Enemed Cup.

In the second part of the match, Exiles’ shooting was much sharper to win both sessions.

Scorers for Exiles were Nicky Paris (3), Mark Fenech (3) and one goal a piece for Aurelien Cousin, Philip paris and Michele Stellini who made his comeback with insertions when Coach Vukanovic thought were necessary.

Exiles had 7 man-up situations but converted just twice whilst Neptunes scored 5 of their 12 man-ups.

The second match of Exiles in the Winter League will be against Valletta United on Saturday 30th March at 16.15 hours at the National Swimming Pool Complex.
