Sirens sink Exiles in last quarter

Sirens 13 Exiles Elia Caterers 10

Partial scores (2-3) (2-2) (2-4) (7-1)

Exiles’ last quarter proved fatal when a three-goal lead (10-7) slipped from their control to concede six goals without reply and get knocked-out in a Quarter-Final tie against a fitter Sirens side which cranked up their energies in the last session to win a tight match.

The two teams met earlier this evening at the National Swimming Pool.

Considering that Sirens are fighting for a direct qualification in the Premier League, they started as favourites. Exiles kept the pace and were concentrated for the first three sessions to build a three goal lead (9-6) before the last quarter. In the fourth session, Sirens defended well and had still enough ‘fuel’ to out-swim their opponents. In the final three minutes of the match were one goal ahead of Sirens (10-9) but the Northerners piled four further goals without any reply to win the tie.

Once again Exiles Coach Igor Vukanovic had to forfeit Matthew Castillo in goal but young Max Martin distinguished himself with some fine saves. As Sirens shooting improved, they managed to overcome Exiles’ resistance  and win the match in the final minutes.

Igor Vukanovic  made use of the following players Max Martin, Michele Stellini (1 goal), Marco Jelaka (3 goals), Timmy Sullivan (1 goal), Sean Xerri de Caro, Mark Fenech (2 goals), Kurt Griscti, Milos Vukicevic (3 goals), Aurelien Cousin, Nicky Paris and Philip Paris.

Man-Up Exiles converted 4 of the 8 chances as well as two penalties. Sirens found the net in 3 of the 8 when in numerical advantage

Exiles resume their Premier Waterpolo League with their fifth and final of the second round when on Wednesday 7th August, they take on Marsaxlokk who in the first round beat Exiles 15-12 to chalk their first win.

Swim-Up at 17.30 at the National Pool Swimming Complex.
