Valletta dash Exiles hopes – relegation looms

Exiles 8 Valletta United 16

(0-5) (4-3) (2-5) (2-3)

This was the last chance for Exiles to catch up with their nearest team in the league table and the sounding defeat at the hands of Valletta United last Saturday condemns our team to the play-out against the winner of the First Division League to retain the Premier status next season.

The partial result of the first quarter (0-5) says it all. The team was never in the game and the expected fighting spirit was conspicuous by its absence throughout the whole match. The discipline in defence of double-marking Valletta’s centre Korolija who potted a poker was as flimsy as the marking of the other foreigner Filipovic who scored no less than 7 goals. There was some reaction mid-way through the third session as the gap was reduced to three goals before the Citizens were back in the driving seat and sent our team empty-handed.

One positive note was the introduction of a few youngsters by Italian Coach Maurizio Mirarchi when the match was almost over.

The following players were utilized Ian Bugeja, Julian Rizzo Naudi, Simon Vassallo, David Pace Lupi, Gergerly Katonas (4 goals), Diego Borg, James Spiteri Staines , Kurt Griscti (2 goals), Luka Sekulic (2 goals), Peter Borg, Benji Lanzon, Nicky Paris and Kayne Lanzon. The next match for Exiles in the Relegation Pool is scheduled for Friday the 22nd August 2014 at the National Pool at 20.00 hours when Exiles take on Sirens.
